The city’s name is a variation of a fictional Indian girl by the name of Alfarata in a 19th century song entitled The Blue Juniata.
Alpharetta’s pioneering cotton farmers wouldn’t believe how high the cotton’s gotten these days. The fields they plowed in the 1800s are sprouting multimillion-dollar estates as Alpharetta moves farther into the upper echelon of metro Atlanta’s housing market
The opening of Ga. 400 in the mid-1990s was a boom for Fulton’s northernmost municipality. The historic town’s popularity soared as more newcomers poured into this area of rolling hills and woodlands.
There’s something about winding along the two-lane roads, seeing the grazing horses and noticing a few deer that makes heading home to Alpharetta a true delight.
The Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center is located in Alpharetta. This 46-acre forest has an abundance of animal life and a scenic creek. There are 1.5 miles of walking trails, picnic areas and historic sites for visitors to enjoy.
The Environmental Education Center is located in Alpharetta. The Center operates as a community service center providing information on environmental topics and features a library with hundreds of valuable resource materials.
Alpharetta is home to the campus of DeVry Institute of Technology, as well as a campus of Georgia State University.
According to 2000 Census, the City of Alpharetta had a population of 34,854 persons. Between 1990 and 2000, the city experienced a population increase of 168.1%, compared to the state growth during this period of 26.4%.
